Over the past decade Northeast Shelby County has emerged as Tennessee’s “Medical Device Corridor” and one of North America’s leading centers for innovation in medical device technology.
The dynamic growth of home spun businesses is a testament to the region’s entrepreneurial spirit and the core competence of its business leaders. However, more and more national and international firms are being attracted to the Corridor as they recognize the benefits and advantages of establishing a presence in the area.

Currently, more than 40 life science companies do business in the area and most of them call the Northeast Shelby County area home. These companies range in products from generic and specialty pharmaceuticals to state-of-the-art medical devices and equipment. Many of these “home grown” companies have matured into competitive world-class leaders in their respective fields and have become major first-tier suppliers within their industry.
Best known for its concentration of orthopedic medical device companies, the Northeast Corridor is home to three major world players – Smith & Nephew, Wright Medical and MicroPort. Medtronics’ Spinal Division is also based in Memphis just 15 minutes from the Corridor. Olympus and Grace Medical, world leaders in E.N.T products, are additional major medical device OEMs that continue to expand their Bartlett locations.
These industry OEM's have been the primary catalyst for the Northeast Corridor’s growth in Life Science. Their continued investments and commitment to the area will insure that the Corridor remains a viable location for Life Science technology and innovation in decades to come. The Greater Memphis Medical Council was formed July 17th 2014, an Incorporated not-for-profit association addressing work force needs and other issues that are critically important for the health of the industry.
